I had already declared Eric Wareheim god after seeing the "Pon De Floor" video, but after Mark showed me the "We are Water" video I decided to extol his godliness to all of you.

For those that don't know, Eric is one half of "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!", a show that deserves it's own post altogether. Lately though, Eric has also been producing some of the greatest music videos ever made. Here's a few (if you're at work good luck!):

MGMT - "The Youth"

A) I love these kids. When they start really dancing you can tell that in real life they're being groomed to be broadway stars.

B) Their routine is hot. Everyone in every club should be doing that chest bump.

c) Great narrative for the song. To capture the feeling of a song is one thing, to turn the feeling of the song into a story is another.

Also, this is a hot jam. It's makes you want to get down in every sense of the expression. And they do!

When I first heard this song, this was exactly what I imagined: a house full of people getting freak nasty. Scientists have proven that combining marching band drum rolls and tweaky electronic sputters instantly creates sexual abandon and anarchy.

Apparently daggering is a real danger, but if the looks on their faces are proof, it's worth it.

I never would of guessed this was one of his videos. In retrospect, I can definitely make out his sensibility, but most noticeably missing is his hyper color palate, green screen, and DANCING. I mean at the heart of all the fun silliness, these videos make you want to dance uninhibited. There's no models or professional dancers who are perfectly sculpted and expertly trained, just normal people enjoying music.

This video is very different. The production values are very high, the color is very dark and muted, and the tone is dark. Which isn't to say that it's not still silly, I mean it is quite ridiculous.

It's nice to see sexuality askewed in a horror setting. I mean we've all seen this scene before where the beautiful blonde gets chased into the woods and manages to unexpectedly or accidentally dispatch her pursuer. But I love that this video instead revels in the absurdity of these kind of scenarios by mixing your expectations with ridiculousness (the goopy reverse penetration, the wig removal and crow-like make-up, and the indulgent orgiastic decapitation / castration bukakke).

You HATE Atlanta? Well fuck you buddy!

Every once and a while I make the mistake of reading some inane posts about why people hate Atlanta (ex. this douche, these fuckers, and these douche fuckers). I was reading this bad boy, and as a native Atlantan unforseeably imbued with hometown pride, I decided to respond.

1) "Traffic sucks in this place!"

Admit it, you live in the burbs. If you lived in the city this would not be your biggest complaint.

When people complain about "traffic" they mean expressway traffic. When they say Atlanta, they mean 50 miles in every direction. Gwinnett is not Atlanta. Alpharetta is not Atlanta. Duluth, Marietta, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Smyrna, Norcross, Snellville are not Atlanta. To every person who complains about the traffic and lives in any of these areas, congratulations. All of you are the creators of the problem complaining about the problem.

If you are so incensed about gridlock, start speaking up and advocating commuter rails. Or move intown and figure out other ways to get around.

2) "There are too many 'Peachtrees'..."

You're an idiot.

3) "Wasn't that a restaurant last month...?"

You're complaining about business turnover? Like you randomly passed some furniture store in Cobb County and now it's a Denny's? Big fucking deal guy! Do you actually care about these places?

Support local businesses! Try your best to get to know someone who works at a store or restaurant you like or at least become enough of a part of the community to know why a business closed.

4) "No one here is even from Atlanta..."

I have no idea why this came up in a search for "atlantans".

That's just not true. If we are to use the broad definition of Atlanta to include the suburbs, most of the population is local. And even if that were not the case, what city in the U.S. is completely local?

Where? Bangor, Maine? Sweet! Of course I won't move there since I'm NOT FROM BANGOR.

5) "Everything is too spread out."
This is true. However, if you eliminate the 'burbs then we're merely discussing the limits of MARTA.

First of all, MARTA sucks. Second of all I've never seen any of you on it.

It's very easy to say that "MARTA goes nowhere" when you don't try to use it. All the complaints I hear about our public transit come from people who do not even try to use the system. I've been asking people for the last couple of months about how the lines changed names and how service has been ridiculously scaled back, and all I've gotten is blank stares. Because we don't use it (and by we I mean the entire middle class) we don't know specifically what's wrong with it. MARTA is a neglected puppy. If we ignore it, it will probably die. If we nurture it, we can teach it tricks.

There's plenty wrong with this city not only with some basic aspects of its infrastructure, but also things like our cultural apathy, our love of retail and restaurant chains (Eat Fresh!), and the massive racial divide. But the kinds of complaints I referred to earlier come from a very specific populous and I just can't stand this suburban attitude about the whole thing.

All of us who live in the city need to know why we do, embrace and extol the virtues of why we do, and work against, not complain about, the things we do not love.

In light of our 3 year anniversary, I started to get a little nostalgic. Here's a few memories from the last 3 years that always make me smile:

Some of my favorite bands have played in our tiny little gallery including: Noot D’ Noot, All the Saints, Anna Kramer and the Lost Cause, Club Awesome, Thy Mighty Contract, Judi Chicago, Herb and Jason Harris (Selmanaires), Jude Stevens, N.E.C and many more.

Artlantis, which for only a month of planning went pretty damn amazing. I still can’t believe we pulled it off.

Getting the Best Of award from Atlanta Magazine and partying at Atlantic Station.

After Aubrey and Jenn’s show when we realized we’d made money for the first time and we had a lights out dance party in the gallery.

Wearing that thrift store suit (the first I ever bought) to the first show I curated at the Westin Hotel.

Rebuilding that wall, re-doing the floor, and getting a business account for Beep Beep phase 2.

The first Me/We show back when we did shows in the Oakhurst house which felt like a huge deal at the time.

The Nashville exchange with Twist Gallery.

Hense and Born, Dixey and Sten, Michi and Dosa, Sam and Joe, Harrison and Zarlacc, Ann-Marie and Jason and a bunch of other cool collaborative shows.

All the solo shows we’ve done. In fact all 38 shows we’ve done.

All of them have brought something unique and needed to Beep Beep whether it's ideas, energy, too much work, or just a smile. They don't get thanked enough for all their hard work, so if you see one (and believe us you'll know one when you see one) go up to them and say "Hey, you're awesome. And supercool. Watchmen Review

Be warned of two things: One, this isn't really about art, although I do consider comics art. Two, I've got a lot to say. And Three, if you haven't read or seen Watchmen (probably both), you shouldn't read this.

I just saw Watchmen for the second time.

I should first preface this with some backstory. I first read the comic in 1993, seven years after it's initial release. I was eleven years old and had just started reading comics like X-Men and Spawn. I had never even heard of Watchmen which at the time held nowhere near the status it does now. My friend Bryan had gotten it from his cousin and brought it over to show me the dead dogs and sex scenes. It was the first thing that I would now consider to be adult that I had encountered at the time.

I've read it many times over the year, always marveling at the shear complexity of the characters and their relationship to each other, the use of symbolism in text and image, and of course the ridiculous and intricate plot. More than anything it's use of circular storytelling where the idea that begins each chapter is revisited at the end (and further recapitulated as the story progresses), has influenced all my writings.

When I heard that they were finally making a film, I was neither excited or annoyed. It would be impossible to do a single film of the whole comic because it takes many hours to read and unlike a novel where the text is condensed into images and thus time saved, Watchmen already had both. I think if it was done in a miniseries of 6 or 12 episodes (twelve being a symbolic number in the comic as well as the number of chapters) it could have worked. But now the movie's been made so that probably won't happen.

Honestly, this is best possible film version of Watchmen I can imagine. Considering the difficult task of condensing the comic, I though the movie did as good a job as possible at keeping with the source material. Essentially it removed all the details, side-characters, most of the character's back story, and some miscellaneous scenes simplifying it into a smaller but definitely cohesive version of the comic. They changed some things (most notibably the monster plot), but logically that was the only way to make the film work without adding several more hours to it.The first time I watched it, I spent the entire time reading the comic in my head: comparing scenes, noting omissions and revisions. They lifted several scenes word for word from the book and completely changed others in weird ways. I don't think I actually saw any of it; it just played in the back of my mind as I compared the comic with it's film.

Tonight I actually saw the movie. I tried to drop the comparisons and decide what I liked and didn't like about it. It's never going to compare with the comic, so it should be judged somewhat objectively on its own with only a slight reverance for the comic. I made some notes on it, so here goes.

First the characters in no particular order.

Comedian - looked cool. They definitely had the look and the attitude down. He got a decent amount of back story although his relationship with Laurie is pretty much left out (more below).

Dr. Manhattan - Easily the best thing about the movie version. Every scene involving Manhattan looked amazing. You could tell they were really into the cgi surrounding the character which is probably why some of the more human characters look cheesy in comparison. His back story and his general tone were the best of everybody's. My friend described the movie to me as "There's a lot of penis in that movie". It's true, the penis to vagina ratio is at gay porn levels in the movie.

Rorschach - Looked just like him. Sounded just like I imagined. Occasionally acted more emotional than him. His back story is the centerpiece of the comic and definitely gets the shaft in the film. The main part of his origin with the kidnapping and the dogs was totally butchered. They missed the visual of the dogs completely, and the significance of his transformation from weirdo to psychopath is sort of washed over. They replace the bleakness of his realization that people are irredeemable with this violent knee jerk kind of reaction instead (more on the violence below.)

Nite Owl - Part of the three backburner characters. He had the least origin story in the comic (his time shared with Hollis Mason, the original Nite Owl), but he's the most relatable out of everyone and I think they conveyed that well. He looks just like him too until he puts the costume on. He kinda looks like all the modern movie superheroes (Batman espescially) but that's to be expected.

Silk Spectre - Dramatic shift in character. She's supposed to be jaded, spiteful, and generally kind of bitchy because of her relationship with her mother and the man she despises / her unknown father. The whole "Comedian is my father" was left out until the last minute (and revealed the first time you see her) but they didn't build it up at all and then acted like it was a big suprise. Along with the big payoff in the comic, the Mars revelation is the big stunner and I thought they pretty much missed the gravity of the connections between Laurie and her parents matched with her connections with Jon and Dan. She kind of takes over Nite Owl's role as the normal character we can all relate to instead of the splintered wife of God that she is. Costume looked ridulous but they nailed her in plain clothes. Missed the smoking though.

Ozymandias - Easily the worst of all of them in appearance and in background. They leave out his whole origin, all the mystique of the super genius that makes him so compelling, and most of all the mystery. They use a shadow effect on him and give him a few choice lines that paint him as a villain from the very beginning instead of buliding him as the most unlikely choice. The moment he reveals his "master stroke" in the comic is what makes the whole thing worthwhile, the event the whole story has been building toward. It would have been impossible to include the monster part of the plan, but I think they could have focused on him just a little more to give that moment more of a "OH SHIT!" kind of response that 11 year old me once had.

The other characters were left out, but understandably. One of the best choices was the intro montage over "Times they are a changin" which gives the audience the Minutemen background without having to go into too much detail. I missed the kid and the newspaper guy, the psychiatrist, the two cops, and especially the Nite Owl I and Silk Spectre I moments. Oh well.

So that's the characters, which are really what makes Watchmen so compelling. My only other critiques of the film are some of the choices made within the film.

The superhero thing - Watchmen is a critique on superheroes, a post-modern approach to an American institution of storytelling about superhuman crime fighters. The only one with powers is Dr. Manhattan and he can hardly be categorized as a hero. The film definitely falls into some of the superhero movie standards of storytelling and action. The extended fight scenes in the film, which I'm sure are necessary to appeal to a broad audience, miss the point of humanizing superheroes. The fights turn them into these Daredevil kind of cats when what makes them interesting is that they're really just normal people who kind of fight crime but aren't unstoppable. The fight with Ozymandias in the comic is short and efficient which makes him more of a baddass because he so effortlessly fights off Rorschach and Nite Owl. In the film it drags it out but achieves the exact same effect as a few backhands, a giant cat, and a dish toss does. Plus it gives him time to explain himself which is what that scene is all about.

Sex and violence - The comic is really violent. I mean the death of New York alone is on it's own level. But in the film they speed up a lot of the scenes that need more character or scene development and up the ante on the violence to replace those things. Why does that dude get his arms cut off? Why are guts hanging from the ceiling? Why does the bone the dogs chew have a shoe attached? The images in the comic are way more poignant and less over the top than in the movie, but I guess they were too subtle compared to the 300 violence. And then there's the super softcore sex scene which was totally unnecessary, oddly long and explicit, and was one of the few times I laughed while watching the movie.

The symbolism - They kept the eleventh hour and dark comedy bloody smiley references in but left out Nostalgia, Black Frieghter, Pale Horse / knot head punks / anarchy, rorschach blots, the nuclear blast image of a couple embracing and a few others I'm forgetting. Acutally there was some reference to a couple of those, but far less prominent than it could have been. The nostalgia perfume linked with the flashbacks wouldn't have been hard to include. I guess this is more nitpicking than anything, but including some of the recurring visual clues throughout the film wouldn't have detracted from the storytelling or made it any longer for that matter.

Okay that's it no more. The good thing about the movie being decent is that hopefully more people will read it. And hopefully they'll make a movie version of this next:

Awesome.

Rest in Power

I remember when we started Beep Beep out of the old Oakhurst house 3 years ago I went to galleries like L'Avenue, Youngblood, and Eyedrum. We were still making new issues of Metatronic and pushing them on all the art cats we knew. When L'Avenue became Beep Beep I started frequenting places like YoYo, Foundation One, New Street, and Rabbithole, and as things progressed more and more spots were springing up (Mint, Get This!, Opal). While all these galleries certainly comprise a fairly specific local scene (that being the young "indie" Atlanta art world), it meant that there was a lot going on. I felt like there were shows I wanted to go to every weekend if only to show support for friends you know?

So now in those 3 years YoYo, L'Avenue, Foundation One, New Street, and from what I hear now Rabbithole have all closed. And what's even worse is that many others in town have closed as well during this time. I even thought that YB was going to close before they found their new (and infinitely better) space.

What's even more interesting is that the economy has nothing to do with any of this! People are always asking us about the economy "So how's art business in this economy?" or I bet people aren't buying art in this economy?" Yeah it's true times are definitely rough for all of us in the arts, but who gives a shit? I'd definitely like to have more money to spend on repairs, advertising, a mailbox etc, but that wasn't the reason we or any of the aforementioned galleries got into this biz. A lot of them hung it up to change cities or focus on their art, music, whatever. That's the beauty and tragedy of my favorite kinds of art spaces: it's all out of love, the love of art and the love of connecting people to it. The only real struggle is keeping things interesting so that the love doesn't get stale or get in the way of your life.

I guess I write all this not to whine or to pat Beep on the back for lasting this long (2 1/2 years what an eternity) but rather hopefully to get more people opening spaces! Anybody can do it! We started a gallery with one month's rent and a bucket of Kilz. Same with Youngblood, Mint, and others. Fuck the money, grab some love and come on.

Coffeeshops, house shows, and similar spots are rad too but we've been there. Restaurants lack control (lighting, space, management) and houses lack accesibility (one night shows, directions/location, people fucking live there the rest of the time). We need more galleries stat! We're tired of hogging all the good artists! Haha

Please check out KRK Ryden's show in December which will unfortunately be Rabbithole's last joint. Hopefully it's like Jay-z's retirement and they'll come back in 6 months.

Creative Confusion

So I like top check out the local art blogs to read about what's going on around town and whatnot, and one website I used to check out was Neda Abghari's Atlanta Creatives Project which at some point was profiling local artists (where'd you go Neda?) So when I saw stickers around town I thought "Man, Neda hangs out in a lot of dude's bathrooms." That is until today when I found ATL Creatives which is a totally different site with an extremely similar goal to the aforementioned Atlanta Creatives Project: "Introduce the world to Atlanta’s creative community." Now both have some great content as well as admirable intentions, and I could care less about which one came first, but what's the deal here?

Furthermore what does it say about Atlanta that these two creative websites share basically the same name? Is it enough to imply that the talents that various organizations (Beep Beep included) represent or spotlight will shine through without some glossing? Does this make your artists or whatever more accesible or more generic? For example if you were to call your group simply "The Art People" would that be interpreted as "awshucks we're humble and unpretentious" or would it be interpreted as "we're not very original so we picked some Google words that people would associate with easily." I mean we're all looking for easy words to get people to remember us by (YES WE CAN!) but c'mon! If I were interested in Boston arts and there was a site called Boston Art Stuff I would assume is was a high school web designer's B+ project.

I'm not saying our's is the most original, magnificent, and ball bustinest art flavored moniker ever :) but I do personally believe that dumbing it down to reach a broader audience should be reserved for daytime television and not for the purveyors of local arts culture.

But perhaps this is a different strokes for different folks kind of thing.

I've never owned shoes I didn't buy at Target, Payless, or some other knock-offery, so I definitely don't know how to rock shoes like these.

No it's not the subtitle for City Slickers 3, it's a toy / sculpture by Beep Beep intern Em Kemph which was featured in last Saturday's Munnybrella show over at Mint Gallery. Em is what they call a "polymath", one whose knowledge is not restricted to one subject area (thanks for the vocab Em.) You can learn all about her various art and music excursions over at her blog notaglumalot.

Warning Signs

Lately I've been really obsessed with warning diagrams and have started working on some pieces featuring them.

There's something really fascinating about an image that has to convey some deadly accident in the simplest form possible without using words. Don't let baby drown in the paint bucket!

The ones without people are the best, especially the "shield your eyes. lasers in operation." sign I have in my bathroom (not pictured). I also really like this one from the air conditioner behind Aurora that looks like an electric shock warning for Masons.
I'll upload some of the drawings as they progress.
